CAPTAIN'S BLOG - 2011 SEASON

Saturday 10th September 2011 – Inter-club Twenty 20

After turning up expecting to play on the astro wicket, Noddy pulled the old Blue Peter trick of “here is something I prepared earlier” and put together a wicket in 25 mins! After a Champions League style draw, the teams were as follows:

Noddy (c) Chris (c)
Will Mike W
Dave Deeps
Poxon Ant
Oli Jim
Shorty Ross W
Pommie Sash
Adam Box

Noddy won the toss and after taking the conditions into consideration (and the hours and hours spent preparing the wicket) decided to have a bat first. Will and Dave strolled out to the middle as the opening pair and Jim was handed the new nut to open the attack. Jim decided to have an appeal to a ball that pitched 2 foot outside leg and was shocked to have it waved away by the ump. Then, off the last ball of the over he thought he’d try to outfox George Best with a little cutter but looked on in horror as it was launched over his head into playground, much to the delight of both teams!

Next over Sash bowled tight and put pressure on the batting side. Best went for a 2nd run that was never on, even with Deeps fielding and Ant behind the stumps and was run out by about 6 feet! Shortly thereafter Sash had Dave ‘Boycott’ Boardman caught going for a big one and Jim had Poxon caught too. Nods side were 26-3 off 3 over's! Next up was Oli, whom Sash cleaned up comprehensively.

Fortunately, Shorty and Noddy put on 20 odd before Shorty chipped the ball straight down Jim’s throat and for the 2nd week running was caught in the same position. Pommie batted well for 12 before Ant cleaned him out with a full one after having softened him up with some short stuff. Phil was last man standing and reached a very well made 50 without breaking into a sweat before picking out Jim in the deep. They finished 146 all out with Nod anchoring it well and the other star player “Extras” with a more than respectable 37.

After some half time refreshments (Strongbow and Fosters) Deeps and Mike W opened up. Deeps played one of the shots of the day cutting Poxon for 4 off the first ball of the innings. However, Poxon got his man 2 balls later after a smart catch in the deep from Oli.

Chris joined Mike in the middle and Pommie got the treatment from Mr. Worsfold who scored 13 off his over. The seam-up ploy didn’t work this time! Poxon got rid of the dangerous Mike, which meant it was time for some Boom Boom magic from Sash. He did not disappoint scoring 15 off 6 balls including one 6 and a couple of 4’s before Noddy caught him off the bowling of Adam. Ross went in and clattered it to all parts scoring a quick 17 before one stuck in the pitch a provided a simple catch.

Ant was next in and steadied the ship but just when we looked in control with Chris on 21 he was bowled by Dave- a rather tasty leg stump yorker! Box was next in and scored 5 including a four! Sadly he was stumped by Shorty next ball by one of Will’s Yardy darts. This was mainly due to the fact he was still celebrating his previous shot!

Jim walked out looking to finish the job with his brother, but Dave came on for his 2nd over and served up a CHICKEN DIPPER which Jim couldn't refuse and Dave had his man, cart wheeling the middle stump! Ant was last man standing and looked like it could be his day when the next ball from Dave brushed the stumps and the bails didn't move an inch (blue tac). Ant carried on and the oppo were worried. Noddy turned to Poxon to finish the job but saw his first ball smashed over mid wicket for 6! The very next ball Poxon pitched one up and got his man, winning the game for Noddy and his side by 20 odd runs.

A great day was had by all, and a brilliant evening finished the season off. Again special thanks to everyone for efforts this year, on and off the field. Hope to see you all next year to continue our charge up the leagues!

Saturday 3rd September 2011 - v Pegasus & Corringham 3rd (a)

After winning the toss on what looked like a nice flat wicket with plenty of runs in it I decided to have a bat. Opening up with Will and Shorty, due some good bowling we struggled to get going and found ourselves at 70-4. Magic and Shorty scored 20 odd each before picking out a fielder. This meant that Ant and Pommie were at the crease, they put on 70 odd in 11 over's with Ant pushing the singles to get the big hitting Pommie on strike who hit two 6’s on his way to 55 not out! When Ant went having scored a solid 18 it meant it was time for BOOM BOOM Sash who did not disappoint with his trade mark straight 6 scoring 14 not out from 5 balls. We finished on 191-7.

Going out to field for the last time we warmed up with a little bit of freestyle keep up! Oli opened the bowling with a great spell and picked up 2 both openers in his first 5 overs. Pommie then joined the party with a wicket, finishing up with 3 with a little bit of help from JONTY Magic, who took a great catch. Oli was back into the attack and took 3 more wickets with Sash taking an excellent catch at 1st slip. Magic then bettered his previous effort with a great catch off Deeps bowling. Sash then fooled the batsman with some buffet before having him caught and bowled.

After doing all we could, we had to wait for other results to come in; when they did it was great news. For the 3rd season running we have won promotion, a great team effort all year this year. Apart from the obvious highlight this season, I just wanted to say thank you for playing and that even when times were hard we stuck together and pulled back round which showed what a good team spirit with have!

Saturday 27th August 2011 - v Woodham Mortimer (h)

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, we opened with Poxon and Oli. We started well and Ollie bowled some great deliveries picking up 2 wickets from his 9 overs. Sash also bowled well and again deserved more than the 1 wicket from his 12. Deeps continued his fine form and picked up a wicket and Pommie bowled with good control and had their top scorer stumped by James Foster, oh no sorry- James Cooper! The oppo finished on 176-7.

Opening the batting with Pommie we made a steady start before he was out- caught trying to push along the score. Mike followed in a similar fashion. Graeme and Magic then came together and Graeme looked good until he was given out LBW, then Magic went pushing at a wide one! The skipper offered some brief resistance with a 24 before being stumped and we were all out for 72, off 22 overs. A disappointing performance with the bat!

We need to pick ourselves up for next weeks must win game. You never what can happen elsewhere so we need to make sure we do our job and get the win!

Going into the last game of the season I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts this season whether it be on field or behind the scenes, the club wouldn't not function as well as it does without you!

Saturday 20th August 2011 - v Springfield 4th (a)

After winning the toss with the call of TAILS, I decided to bat first and the new opening pair of skip and Shorty got off to a fairly good start before the skipper was dismissed after some good work by the oppo's young keeper. Shorty scored 25 before going, bringing in Magic to the crease. Mike W went on the last ball before we came off for rain with score at 70-4 from 22 over's.

We was off for an hour and we took an early tea. When play resumed we had lost 10 over's per side, so we had 12 over's to get on with it, Magic scored a quick 51 and was supported at the end with 19 not out from Dave. Finishing on 161-8 which the skipper was more than pleased with.

Opening up with Poxon and Deeps, there weren't too many runs but not much going on so the skip decided to that they should change ends which seemed to work a treat. Poxon bowling 10-3-28, Sash picked up a wicket from his over. Then the star of the show Deeps took stage picking up 4 wickets from his first 10 over's including a good catch from Sash in the gully. In his 11 over Deeps got his 5th wicket, and then next ball after a good catch from Dave at point it was 6 and Deeps in now on hatrick for next week.

A good team performance, with everyone contributing with either bat, ball or in the field. A good platform going into next weeks big game against Woodham Mortimer, if we continue to play the cricket we have been producing in the last 5 weeks we will be on the way to div 8.

Saturday 13th August 2011 - v Marconi (h)

After winning the toss and putting the league leaders into bat, we made a great start with Poxon getting the opener in the third over after a brilliant catch from Deeps. That was Poxon first of 4 wickets, his 4th wicket was very special, a great ball and an even better catch from Chris Shelly playing his first game in 5 years to take the ball one handed to remove their best batsman. Poxon finishing with 4-23 from his 12 with 9 maidens and his first 10 over's went for 8 with. Poxon was backed up by Oli who bowled well at the end and finished with 2-30 from his 12. Deeps picking up 2 wickets in his 10 overs. Sash bowled well again and picked up a wicket in his last over. Marconi finishing on 146-9.

Opening up with Shorty, we decided to open with Will in a bid for him to find his form again. This move proved to work as Will smashed his way to 100 not out hitting 4 big 6's along the way, putting the league leaders top bowling attack to all parts. Shorty played well, picking up five 4's along the way to his 32 not out, but most importantly just pushing the singles to get the big man on strike. We needed 8 to win and Will was on 92. The next ball was dispatched for a boundary and then the following one got the treatment as well to win the game by 10 wickets and to bring up Will's ton.

A great team performance with bat, ball and in the field. After this weeks performance it means that 2nd place in now in our hands with 3 games to go. Aas we go into this weeks game against Springfield I will be looking for the same performance level that we have set in the last 4 games.

Saturday 6th August 2011 - v Terling II (a)

After losing the toss and being stuck in by the oppo, we made a slow but solid start with Mike and Shorty. Mike went for 17 but Shorty batted on before going for 39, unfortunately Noddy had to retire hurt after top edging one into his eye and was force to go to hospital. After this the next couple of batsman were not themselves and we loss wickets in a flurry. After a few uneventful overs the skipper went in and brought together KP and Sashin with the score at 109 for 8. Sash decided he had enough of blocking and made a quick 35 including 3 sixes, along with Poxon making an impressive 23 not out. Finishing with 160 all out after Ollie hauled out to mid wicket in the last over.

Going out to field with 10 we knew it would be hard but we knew of we bowled in the areas we did last week we could bowl the oppo out. Poxon opened up with Ollie who got their dangerous opener with a jaffer. Ollie then went on to take out the next 2 batsman again with a beauty with ball brushing the glove on the way through to the Clive “the Juggler” Short. Poxon then joined the party to dismiss their skipper after a little short ball plan from the bowler and the skipper. Poxon finishing with his first 5 wicket haul. Deeps collected an obligatory 2 wickets and the oppo were all out for 45 off 23 overs.

Great win on sat a real team effort and some brilliant individual performances. The team would like to dedicate the win to Nod and hope to see him back at the crease sooner rather then later. The win moves us to second in the league now, we are on a good run going into the game at home to Marconi and if we can bat our 45 over's I don't see a reason why we can’t beat them.

Saturday 30th July 2011 - v Sandon (h)

After winning the toss and opting to have a bat, we made a steady start with Mike and Shorty putting on 80 for the first wicket with Mike Worsfold going on to make 59. Graeme came in and made 18 before being caught at mid wicket, causing a massive collapse going from 121-1 to 132-9. Pommie and Poxon put on 26 for the last wicket with Pommie 16 not out and season high score of 8 for Poxon.

Going out to field we managed to get all the boys pumped up to defend our total. Opening with Poxon and Pommie with only leaked 2 runs in the first 2 over then Poxon knock back their skippers off peg back. Then it was Pom Bears turn trapping the new batsman on the crease. In the field we backed the bowlers up with 110% in the field from everyone. Deeps came on from the Field End looking rather casual bowling with his shades on, this seem to have some effect as he was sending them now sharper than usual. It was not long before Deeps picked up a wicket. Sash who has not bowled a lot this year was thrown the ball, and responded with probably his best spell for the club finishing with figures of 12-1-24. Pommie came back into the attack and picked up 2 wickets to finish with 12-3-23. Poxon came on for another burst and kept it tight finishing with 11-1-21. Deeps finishing with 10-3-31. We bowled the oppo out for 110 in the 47 over with claiming the final wicket.

After a disappointing batting performance from 4 down, we picked ourselves up and produced the best bowling and fielding performance I have seen since I have skipper. A great win on sat and it meant back to back victories which we haven't achieved since the start of the season. Let have a big push for the last 5 games, starting with win over Terling this coming weekend.

Saturday 23rd July 2011 - v Rayleigh Fairview III (a)

After losing the toss Rayleigh put us in the field on what looked a greasy wicket. Their openers made a positive start going after the ball hard, Poxon bowled well again without much reward in his first spell. Deeps came on and got the breakthrough wicket with Shorty taking a sharp catch with his new gloves. Deeps bowled well again at took a couple of wickets. Pomme bowled well and got the wickets his deserved in his final 2 overs, also Jonty Adcock running 2 of their batsman out. We restricted the oppo to 209-8 from 45 which only saw 14 runs coming from the last 5 overs.

Noddy and Will opened up, after losing an early wicket Dave joined Nod in the middle and steadied the ship for a few overs. Just as Dave looked set he got slightly unluckily with ball just bushing the very top of the bails. That meant the arrival of Graeme at the crease, he and Nod built a good partnership with Noddy reaching 54 before falling LBW. Graeme went on to his highest score of 95 not out finishing with a massive straight 6 to take us past the required total.

Sat was a good team win with everyone playing they part with bat, ball or in the field. The result puts us in a good position to push for that 2nd spot and take the club forward, let’s make sure we continue the winning streak this sat.

Saturday 25th June 2011 - v Woodham Mortimer 2nd (a)

After losing the toss and being asked to bat on what was a wet looking pitch, we opened up with Noddy and George Best. They put on around 40 before Best was out for 23- shortly thereafter we lost a couple of quick wickets. That meant that the skipper and Ant (on debut) were at the crease and just when it seemed the skipper was in, he got himself out. Sash and Ant batted well and they wouldn’t have got Ant out if it weren’t for a freak bit of luck with a short ball being bottom edged on to his thigh, foot then arm and hitting the off stump. Sash toped scored with 30 including a big straight 6, his trademark shot! We lost wickets regularly and were all out for 132. A good 40 to 50 runs short!

Just as we went out to bowl the sun came out and as you would expect started to dry the wicket out, taking away the bit of assistance from the pitch you need when your trying to bowl a side out for less than 130! Karl and Deeps bowled well for not many, along with Deadman and Rossi. Jim and Sash picked up a wicket again for not many runs. Despite the loss, our attitude in the field and with the ball was brilliant and made it enjoyable despite the inevitable.

As for the last few weeks our batting has let us down and has denied us a couple of possible victories. We need to put this behind us and starting batting for the full 45 overs, if we do this then everything else will fall into place as bowling and fielding has been of a good standard. I would like to thank everyone for their efforts over the first half on the season they are much appreciated and if this continues there is no reason why we shouldn’t win promotion for the 3rd season running as we are currently lying 2 points away from 2nd.

Skipper

Saturday 18th June 2011 - v Springfield 4th (h)

After winning the toss, stand in skipper for the day Rossi decided to bat first and put runs on the board.  The old guard of Noddy and Magic got us off to a steady start before the heavens opened and forced us off the field for a lengthy period of time which meant the loss of 8 overs from each side’s innings. When play did resume Magic was unlucky to pull up with a groin/thigh strain and not long after lost his wicket.  Phil and Mike W both went on to notch up what seems like obligatory 50+ scores this season and with good support from the skipper for the day (33 not out) and the middle order we finished on 227 off our 37 overs.

When we took to the field Rossi and The Colonel took a couple of early wickets both bowling good line and length and the wickets fell at regular intervals thereafter.  The Colonel continued his fine start to the season adding another 4 wickets to his growing collection, with Rossi taking a catch of the season contender off of one of The Colonels zingers.  Had it not been for Magic having an afternoon nap in the slips and Dave doing his Bambi on ice impression whilst trying to take a catch then The Colonel would have had a few more wickets to his name.  Pom Bear also picked up 4 wickets including 2 stumpings by old velcro gloves himself, Noddy.  Pom Bear bowled an unusually but effective mixture of off spin and medium pace dibbly dobblers.  Deano chipped in with a few overs and picked up a wicket off his first ball for the club.  Sash was rather unhappy that he only got the one over on the day but did well not to mention it to anyone... We bowled them out for 77 stopping the run of recent defeats and with results going our way elsewhere this result sees us moving up to 2nd in the league.

Let’s make this the start of a long winning run.

Reluctant match reporter Dave

Saturday 11th June 2011 - v Marconi (a)

Having lost the toss the home side put us into field. Poxon and the skipper opened the bowling with brilliant spells, and worked well as a partnership. Karl bowled some unplayable deliveries without any wickets from his 11 overs. Jim finished with figures of 2-33 from his 10. Deepal bowled well again picking up 1 wicket after an unbelievable catch by the skip at first slip. Graeme picked up 2 wickets including their opener on 97, Deadman bowled well and picked up 1, only going for 19. Not bad considering he bowled all 4 overs in the last 8 of the innings. Marconi ending up with 206-6

Going out to bat we thought we were in with a decent chance, but unfortunately we lost early wickets which put pressure on the lower order. Shorty was unlucky to be run out with a direct hit. Noddy carried his bat for 31 and Deadman and Deeps offered a little bit of resistance with Noddy but it wasn’t to be. We were all out for 92.

I would like to thank everyone who played, with special thanks to Shorty who came straight from the airport and risked a good old telling off from his missus. Adam also played even though his missus was due to give birth on Sat and Dean who got the call on the day. It was very much appreciated. Thanks to everyone for your efforts on Saturday, especially in the field on what was a very quick outfield.

Let us put the last 3 games behind us and take the positives from the games and push on for promotion.

Saturday 4th June 2011 - v Terling 2nd (h)

After losing the toss and being put into bat, we didn’t get off a great start losing to early wickets in difficult windy conditions. Losing wickets at regular intervals, just as batsman seem to have overcome the wind and played themselves in they got out with the exception of Mike W who batted brilliant for 92. He got some late support from the inform Pom Bear who end up 33 not out. Finishing up on 215 all out was about 20 runs short on what was a good track.

Going out to bowl we were confident of defending the total as we had a strong bowling attack. Karl opened the bowling and bowled 12 straight through with pace, line and length and deserved more then his 2 wickets for 40. Oli bowled well at the other end without much luck picking up 2 wickets from his 11. Deeps and Pom bear bowled well together again and going in to the last 6 overs they needed 7 an over but they had the little bit of luck that you sometimes need in those positions and saw the game home with 7 down and 2 overs to go.

Big game next week at Marconi they are unbeaten but I know we are more then capable of getting the win we need in order to push on again.

Jim

Saturday 28th May 2011 - v Sandon Sports 2nd (a)

After winning the toss again, we decided to bowl with overcast conditions and a pitch with plenty of going on. Oli got rid of their opener with a good bit of line and length bowling, and then he softened the other opener up with some short stuff before having him caught in the gully with a sharp catch from the HAND OF NOD. Deeps and Deadman came on and bowled two brilliant spells picking up 3 each for not many. The home side ending up on 161 all out.

With a strong batting line up chasing down 162 should have been no problem, but with some poor shots and some as assistance from the pitch we found ourselves 55-8. Jim and Pom Bear put on 70 to give us a chance of winning the game with some good batting. Unfortunately the skipper went for 32, Deadman carried for a couple of overs after but ended up being caught on the boundary with us 20 odd short of our target.

Jim

Saturday 21st May 2011 - v Rayleigh Fairview 3rd (h)

After winning the toss again and choosing to bat first on what was an excellent wicket and with our run machines at the top of the order were away I decided to open up with Dave and Will. Dave batted for 27 overs scoring 42 and allowing Mike W to bat around him, Mike scored a quick 60 odd before being caught on the boundary. In the last 10 overs magic and Graeme scored over 90 runs with Graeme carrying his bat for 64 and Magic “Boycott” batting for his average blocking out 2 balls in the final over. Despite this we ended up on 271-3 a great team display with the bat.

Opening the bowling with Poxon he was unlucky as the majority of the runs against him came through edges, he picked 2 wickets including a great caught and bowled. They got off to a flyer and were 113-1 off 14 overs but we managed to pull back round showing good character. Deadman came on to try and contain the run rate but in his first over helped it along nicely, after that he came back and picked up 2 wickets including their danger man. Deeps picked up 2 wickets from his 11 overs. Ollie came on to replace Deaders and bowled quick full and straight finishing with figures of 3-12 of 5 overs. Ted picked up a wicket after a superb catch from man of the match Dave.

A good result and a great start to the season and I am looking forward to next week away at Sandon and keeping our 100% record going.

Jim

Saturday 14th May 2011 - v Boreham 2nd (a)

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first on a decent looking track, we got off to great start with the in form pair, Shorty and Noddy, putting on 176 for the first wicket. Noddy scored 93 and Shorty 87, including 2 sixes- calm down Alan Moody! Graeme came in and calmed things down scoring 28 and after a small flurry of wickets we finished on 281-8.

Karl Poxon and Jim Cooper opened the bowling, with Karl bowling a sharp 10 over spell picking up 2 wickets along the way. At the other end the skipper kept the pressure on with good line and length bowling and picked up 1 wicket in his 9 overs. Deadman had the oppo skipper stumped by Shorty and then Deepal bowled a great spell and picked up 4 wickets for the second week running. Rossi picked up 2 weeks towards the end of the innings.

It was a great team effort with everyone doing their bit when needed. In the field we were excellent on a fast and bumpy outfield with everyone backing up the bowlers. We bowled them out for 218 to register our second win on the spin.

This has been a great start to the season and we should be looking forward to carrying our good form into next weeks home game against Rayleigh Fairview III.

Saturday 7th May 2011 - v Willow Herbs 2nd (h)

After losing the toss and being put in on a slightly green wicket, the old guard of Noddy and Shorty continued their tour form and put on over 100 for the first wicket -Shorty scoring 45 and Noddy top scoring with 62 before being run out for the 2nd match running (fitness running needed during the week!). Will came in at 3 and showed money well spent on the winter nets hitting a rapid 61, scoring 50 in boundaries, including 3 sixes (not 4)! Just when it looked like we may get near 300, Magic came in to ensure the run rate slowed right down. However, with Graham scoring a solid 25 and despite a late flurry of wickets we reached maximum batting points - 259 for 9.

The new opening bowling partnership of Karl and Oli looked really impressive, with Karl bowling quick and aggressively (and angrily!!). Karl picked up 2 wickets and Oli deserved more than his single wicket. Deepal and Adam then bowled great line and length, with wickets falling at regular intervals our total was never under threat, with Willow Herbs finishing 119 all out. Deepal took 4 wickets, including a good catch from Oli. Adam carried on from last season, picking up 3 wickets. Dave took one good catch and almost took a 'blinder' with the ball just slipping out as he hit the ground. Magic also stopped a certain 4 at 2nd slip, waking up just in time to ensure he got his hands nowhere near the ball!!

A great start to the season and a selection headache for the skipper next week!

Mike W (Stand-in) Skipper

Tuesday 3rd May 2011

Firstly I’d like to thank everyone who came on tour for a very enjoyable couple of days.

On field matters were good with us winning both games, more importantly chasing on both occasions. The 20/20 we bowled well and batted very well under fading light apart from Mike Worsfold getting a golden duck, but Deeps went on to top score to put us in control. Second game our fielding left something to be desired but that may have something to do with the antics from the previous evening. However, I always felt that we would have enough with the bat chasing 225 to win. The openers Noddy and “I just wanted to cover drive them” Shorty got us off to a great start with Noddy scoring 38 and Shorty 53. Will then helped us along the way with a quick fire 47, although we lost a few quick wickets we saw it home and won the match with 1 over spare.

IoW Tour Team 2011

On the social side of things it was very enjoyable and good to see Tony who pulled on the Wakering shirt once more. Dan Deadman’s celebration and sprinkler dance was one of the highlights tour along with some comments made by our away support, “watch out Ikea will get you!” And my personal favourite…well Deaders knows what it is.

Everyone paid their signing-on fees so thanks to all the boys, and thanks to Noddy as he drove there and back at 50mph, as any faster the bus would have blown up.

Check out the Photo Gallery which includes the team photo from the Friday timed match.

Great tour and bring on next year.

Wednesday 20th April 2011

Firstly, I would like thank everyone for their efforts last season which saw us promoted for the second season running. My thanks especially goes to those involved in off-fields matters as these are just important as on-field matters and continue to allow our club to exist.

The new season is only a couple of weeks away now and I am personally looking forward to another successful year. Before the start of the season we have our pre-season tour of the Isle of White starting on the 28th April, playing a 20/20 and a 45 over game. Hopefully this will give us a chance to get our eye before the start of the league campaign.

Nets this Saturday 23rd April start at 09:45 over the school. I would like to see a decent turnout, as in previous weeks, especially with the season so close.

Many thanks,

Skip
