CAPTAIN'S BLOG

Saturday 23rd May 2015 - South Weald 2nd (h)

Team: Jim Cooper (cpt), Mike Worsfold, Graham Overall, Clive Short, Jim Stewart (wk), Carl Sutton, Jeff, Ant Cooper, Tony Wells, Millhouse

After losing the toss the oppo asked us to have bat with plenty of cloud cover about- we knew it would be tough up front. Opening with the Skip and Mike we got off to a steady start before Mike was caught at mid-off and then the skipper was caught behind. Their openers bowled well and didn't give much away. G looked to have got himself in before being trapped lbw. Jim Stewart and Ant steadied things up and Jim started to get the scoreboard ticking with some lovely lofted drives. Ant then started to join in the fun with a couple of 4's of his own. Jim eventually went for a well made 46, Ant however was in for the long haul. Their opening bowler returned to try and keep things tight in the last 4 overs but Ant had other plans and put 3 massive 6's in the field over the sightscreen bringing up his first 50 along the away. Ant finished 68 not out leaving us on a very good score of 184-7.

Going out to bowl we wanted early wickets but unfortunately due to a little bit of bad luck and some good batting we was unable to get the breakthrough. Millhouse came on to bowl and in his second over got the wicket we needed leaving the oppo 61-1 from 12. The oppo continued to edge closer to target until Mike and the Mayo Dodger started to bowl in tandem. G dismissed the other opener after a great catch behind the stumps from Jim. Mike then got in on the act bowling their number 4. We knew we were right in the game and needed to go on the attack. Then a strange thing, Pom and me were sure we picked up the wrong bloke from Portsmouth as this geezer, who was meant to be Ant, took a good catch after a bit of juggling off the Dodgers bowling! Mike continued from the other end and picked up another wicket, leaving the oppo needing 45 from 9 overs with 2 wickets left. Mike then picked up his 4th wicket after a good catch from the Skip racing in from the boundary. Our tails were and G Man steamed in and bowled their final batsman to complete a great win and turn around.

After being under the cosh in both innings we dug in and showed our team spirit to get over the line and make 4 wins from 4. It sure was a Carlsberg weekend for everyone involved in club with Southend getting promoted on Saturday evening and to top it off some of the squad finished Saturday enjoying a beer & jaeger with some the Southend squad.

Saturday 16th May 2015 - Danbury 1st (a)

With the skip away and vice-skip still injured, it was left to Mike to lose the toss and get put in on a damp wicket. After a steady start, the old boys managed a bit of yes/no calling resulting in Noddy being run out. G then went early (pressure of the bet getting to him) and it was left to Shorty and then Matt to help steady things with Mike. Laggo then joined Mike and the scoreboard moved steadily along before Mike was caught on the boundary for 99. With some big hitting towards the end, along with a flurry of wickets, we finished on 211 for 9 - Laggo hit a great 46 including a lovely straight 6 (should announce his retirement every week!)

Robbie and Sash opened up and kept things tight early on, with Sash picking up one of the openers after a bit of juggling from Geoff at 2nd slip - the scoring rate started to increase before Dean  bowled their other opener - the oppo then continued to get up to the required rate before a great catch by Dean in the deep and a smart stumping from Jim, both off the stand-in skips bowling, put us back in the game - The game continued to be tight, but with Sash bowling really well at the end (finishing with 3 for 27), we thought we were safe with 26 required from the last 2 overs. However, the oppo had either ideas and got to needing 2 to tie and 3 to win off the last ball, with one wicket remaining - Dean held his nerve on the boundary to hold a great catch under pressure for us to scrap a win by 2 runs - All in all an excellent game of cricket.

Saturday 9th May 2015 - Navestock Ardleigh Green 1st (h)

Team: Jim Cooper (cpt), Mike Worsfold, Graham Overall, Phil Adcock, Matt Overall, Clive Short, Jim Stewart (wk), Dean Overall, Robbie, Carl Sutton, Jeff

After winning the toss the skipper decided to have a bowl. Opening with Sash and Mr T-Rex (who was back from his holidays) we got off to a good start with Sash picking up the first wicket up, bowled. This was the first of 3 wickets for Sash (which he still owes a jug for). Robbie picked up number 3 after a good catch behind from Jim Stewart. Dean and Jazzy bowled well without picking up anything but kept it tight. Mike "Golden Arm, One Shot" Worsfold came on and picked up 2 wickets and again kept things tight. The oppo finished on 163-6.

The Skipper and Mike opened up and had 20 on the board before the Skipper was caught for 14. Mike was joined by G and the two of them got about knocking off the runs, at times making it look effortless. Both reached their 50’s with big 6’s. Mike finished 73 not out and G 60 not out meaning we reached the target with 28 over's.

Saturday 2nd May 2015 - Woodham Mortimer 2nd (a)

Team: Jim Cooper (cpt), Mike Worsfold, Graham Overall, Mike Walker, Matt Overall, Clive Short, Jim Stewart (wk), Dean Overall, Tom Baker, Carl Sutton, Dan Deadman

Wakering get off to a winning start after an enjoyable game of cricket against Woodham Mortimer. After losing the first toss of the year the oppo decided to have a bat. Opening the bowling with Rory (Tom) and Sash we got off to a good start with the first runs not coming off the bat until the 5th over. Rory was unlucky not to pick up at least 2 wickets in his first spell with 2 tough chances going down. Deano was on first change and he produced a beauty to dismiss the oppo's skipper who was looking dangerous. Our skipper then picked up a wicket with the classic slower ball bouncer! Pom came on and was straight on it picking up 4 wickets including a stumping for Jim Stewart behind the stumps. Tom and Sash came on and finished off keeping it tight with Tom picking up a wicket, leaving the oppo 186-8 from 45 over's.

After a lovely tea of jackets and chilli, we opened up with the skipper and One Shot Worsfold. The 2 got off to a great start putting on a 146 for the first wicket before Mike was caught for 46 after a great innings. The skipper went next over, top edging one to fine leg for 83. This left the Mayo Dodger and Magic "I have retired, no I haven't, oh actually my back hurts" Walker to finish the job. The Dodger finished 26 unbeaten and Magic 12 to give us the win by 8 wickets.

April 2015

Last year was another good season from Wakering which saw us just miss out on promotion by 6 points. Despite not gaining promotion there were several positive notes throughout the summer where the whole squad contributed along the way. We had strong second half of the season beating 2 of the 3 promoted sides. Also the club, and the skipper Jim Cooper, were nominated for an Exceptional Sporting Award.

The Evening league side had another successful campaign finishing up runners up in both the league and the cup competitions and they were the only team to beat the champions Emerson last season.

As we go into the new season we will be looking to be as successful as possible in both Saturday and mid-week cricket. The year will see Great Wakering CC return to Sunday league cricket with us joining the Division 2 in the Warsop league.

As most of you know the new roof on the pavilion is finished and on behalf of every at the club a big thanks to Noddy for making all arrangements and applying for the grant.

Nets will run throughout the season on Wednesday evenings from 6pm at the school

Joining fees this year are £40 and need to be paid before the start of the season.

We have a friendly away to Great Waltham on the 26th April and then start our TRippon campaign with an away trip to Woodham Mortimer. Our first evening league game is at home on the 5th May.

Big thanks to our Sponsors Riskology and The Exhibition Inn for their continued support this in the 2015 season.
